Full time study for three academic years.

Admission requirements
Icelandic matriculation examination (studentsprof: school leaving examination after four years of secondary school) or another secondary examination which the University board regards as equivalent.

Programme requirements
180 ECTS credits have to be completed for the qualification from the FS-REM program, 60 ECTS credits per year. Students have to complete all the first and second year credits before they commence on their third year. Obligatory courses are 156 ECTS credits, and optional courses are equivalent to 14 ECTS credits. Students complete their studies with a research project of 10 ECTS credits. The students present the results of their research project in a written thesis and an oral examination.

FS-REM Program addresses natural resource management with emphasis on two land-use categories; establishment and management of forests and restoration and management of degraded lands; both important environmental goals in Iceland. The FS-REM Program includes fundamental scientific education, but takes students well beyond the boundaries of traditional disciplines, such as Forestry and Biology. Connections between land-use, natural, technical, planning and economic sciences are emphasized, and elements such as landscape planning and geographical systems are included in the program. This combination is not offered at other universities in Iceland. The FS-REM program has two main streams; Forest Science (FS) and Restoration Ecology and Management (REM).

The Forest Science stream focuses on the forest, both as a renewable natural resource and as an ecosystem that provides many important ecological services. In Iceland, where a forestation is a growing activity, it is of high importance to educate people in scientific and technical methods of sustainable forest management and related subjects that traditionally are thought within forest science faculties and programs, such as forest planning (including landscape analysis), silviculture, technology, inventory, and innovation. Another focus is on the so called soft skills, such as rhetoric, leadership, project management, small scale economics (entrepreneurship) and independent studies.

The programme has the objective of providing a reliable basis for M.Sc. studies in forest science, forestry, or other related subjects.
