Agricultural Science

This programme enters into the perspectives of the economic, biological and technical conditions for livestock and land utilization and various aspects of agricultural sciences, such as feeds and feeding, breeding, housing and animal well-being. Natural resources are addressed, emphasizing ecology, biology, livestock science, soil science, chemistry etc. Insights are provided into the technology of utilizing natural resources, for instance work procedures, machines, tools and the environment.

Icelandic, only occasionally in English or Scandinavian languages. Most textbooks are in English or Scandinavian languages

Level of qualification

Three years at first cycle (level 2) of higher education according to National Qualification Framework for Higher Education in Iceland.

Official length of programme

Full time study for three academic years.

Admission requirements

Icelandic matriculation examination (studentsprof: school leaving examination after four years of secondary school) or another secondary examination which the University board regards as equivalent.

Programme requirements

A total of 180 ECTS credits is required for the BSc degree. The programme is structured as a three-year course of study, with 60 ECTS credits per year. All courses from the first year must be completed before beginning the third year.

The BSc programme consists of:

  • 146 ECTS in core courses
  • 18 ECTS in restricted electives
  • 16 ECTS in free electives

Students complete the programme with a 10 ECTS final project and BSc thesis.

This three-year bachelor's programme in Agricultural Sciences provides students with a broad foundation in applied biology and agricultural sciences. The programme combines natural sciences, crop production, and animal science with business and technology subjects, with a strong emphasis on Icelandic agriculture and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The aim of this programme is to prepare students for careers and projects related to agriculture and land use, as well as to lay the foundation for postgraduate studies and academic work in the field. The curriculum covers, among other subjects, crop production, feed and nutrition, breeding, animal biology and welfare, as well as core natural sciences subjects such as chemistry and biology.

Upper secondary leaving certification (Stúdentspróf) or other upper secondary qualifications deemed equivalent and approved by the University Council.

In addition, it is recommended that applicants have:

  • level two competence in natural sciences
  • Level 3 competence in English, particularly reading academic texts
  • Level 2 competence in mathematics, especially general algebraic and equation-solving methods

The BSc degree prepares students for a wide range of careers related to agriculture, including advisory services, teaching, and research. The programme is also an excellent preparation for further studies in veterinary medicine, farm management, or employment with companies that support agriculture and rural industries.

The university has an active student association, Nemendafélag LBHÍ, under which various clubs operate and organize events throughout the year, including:

A master's degree (MSc) in Agricultural Sciences enhances qualifications for work in advisory and extension services and various agriculture-related professions. It is also possible to pursue doctoral studies (PhD) in certain fields of agricultural sciences. There is a significant global demand for professionals educated in agricultural sciences.
