What will I study?
The Equine Science programme is a three-year Bachelor’s (BSc) degree whose primary objective is to provide students with a broad education in applied biology, alongside
specialised knowledge in core agricultural sciences and equine biology, handling, and training. Students receive a foundation in natural sciences that is built upon with agricultural specialisations and advanced equine-specific courses. Please note that attendance is mandatory in practical courses. Teaching takes place in Hvanneyri.
The programme is broadly structured so that foundational natural science courses, core agricultural science subjects, and business-related courses are combined with riding instruction and horse-related subjects. Emphasis is placed on developing a strong and comprehensive knowledge base in all major areas of equine science, with a particular focus on the Icelandic horse. Upon completion of the BSc degree in Equine Science, graduates will possess a broad understanding of animal science, as well as both theoretical and practical knowledge in the main disciplines of equine science, with an emphasis on Icelandic horses.

Facilities
The university’s equine centre is located at Mið-Fossar and accommodates approximately 70 horses in individual stalls. The facility includes direct access to a well-equipped indoor riding arena suitable for teaching, demonstrations, and competitions. Rental includes hay and bedding, with full access to all facilities.
