Upper secondary leaving certification (Stúdentspróf) or other upper secondary qualifications deemed equivalent and approved by the University Council.

In addition, it is recommended that applicants have:

• Level two competence in natural sciences
• Level 3 competence in English, particularly reading academic texts
• Level 2 competence in mathematics, especially general algebraic and equation-solving methods.

Applicants must submit confirmation that they have completed Knapamerki 2 with their application. If a student has not completed Knapamerki 2 prior to the start of studies, the student is responsible for completing it during the first two years of the programme. Confirmation of completion must be submitted no later than the end of the second year, or before enrolment in the course 05.52.04 Riding I in the third year.

A total of 180 ECTS credits is required for the BSc degree in Equine Science (60 ECTS per year). All courses from the first and second years must be completed before commencing the third year.

The programme consists of:

166 ECTS in core courses 4 ECTS in electives

Students complete the degree with a 10 ECTS final project and BSc thesis. The Equine Science programme addresses the economic, biological, and technological conditions of livestock farming and land use, with specialisation in horse breeding and management.

The curriculum covers various aspects of agricultural sciences, including crop production, feed and nutrition, breeding, livestock biology, animal housing and welfare, as well as core natural science subjects such as chemistry and biology. Courses in the third-year focus on specialised equine subjects.

The International Office of LBHÍ assists students and staff in participating in studies and collaboration abroad. This includes exchange programmes through Erasmus+ and Nordplus, as well as other exciting international projects. A BSc degree in Equine Science prepares you for a wide range of careers related to agriculture, such as advisory services, teaching, and research. The programme is also an excellent preparation for further studies in veterinary medicine, farm management, and employment with companies that support agriculture and rural industries. You will be qualified for careers in

the equine sector, including the operation of horse farms, specialised services, advisory roles, and the dissemination of knowledge to horse breeders and equestrians.

The university has an active student association, Nemendafélag LBHÍ, under which various clubs operate and organize events throughout the year, including:

Hvanneyri is a rural campus 1 hrs drive from Reykjavík. Student accommodation is available on campus.

The programme is also an excellent foundation for postgraduate studies at the master's level (MSc) in Equine Science at LBHÍ. There are also opportunities for further research studies leading to a doctoral degree (PhD) in this field.
