The project is currently being developed with support from a preparatory Arctic research grant between Iceland and Norway and aims to investigate how urban densification can promote sustainable, healthy, and culturally grounded development in Arctic regions. The purpose of the preparatory grant is to lay the groundwork for a larger collaborative project and to apply for international funding.

Arctic cities face unique challenges due to extreme climatic conditions, rapid environmental change, sparse populations, and complex demographic patterns. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the project explores how residents’ needs, climate, public health, and planning practices influence perceived wellbeing. It examines housing, lifestyle, community, transport, and cultural resources, while also addressing governance and urban planning challenges.

By integrating spatial modelling, environmental and health assessments, and qualitative analyses, the project aims to develop practical, context-sensitive planning tools tailored to the specific conditions of Arctic settlements.
